«Ухо к земле». To keep one's ear to the ground — это значит «приложить ухо к земле», т. е. быть в курсе всех дел, быть хорошо информированным, быть начеку. Можно предположить, что эта фраза относится к способности индейского разведчика на Диком Западе в Америке определять приближение точного количества всадников, приложив ухо к земле. Эта фраза может также относиться к ложному представлению о птице, охотящейся на насекомых, которая, прислушиваясь, наклоняет голову то в одну, то в другую сторону. (На самом деле птица вертит головой, т. к. она способна видеть только одним глазом.)
